While it’s still a few weeks before the 2012 WFTDA derby season gets rolling in earnest, this January weekend sees a fair amount of interesting banked track, expo and intraleague action to check out.
San Diego Wildfires @ L.A. Ri-Ettes: The latest edition of the longstanding SoCal banked rivalry kicks off the 2012 season for both teams; just last month, many of these same skaters faced off in an emotional battle for the LADD championship when LADD’s Sirens stopped SDDD’s The Swarm, 132-106. Live on DNN courtesy of the LA Derby Dolls, 8pm Pacific (11pm Eastern), Saturday.
Midwest Mega Team @ (14) Naptown: Naptown’s all-stars go up against an impressive collection of talent from regional teams, drawing mostly from Windy City (Jackie Daniels, Ol Dirty Go Go, Karmageddon, Ruth Enasia), Arch Rival (Downtown Dallis, Grave Danger, Mayor Francis Slayer, Chewblocka, Shimmy Hoffa) and Ohio (Outa My Wayman, Phoenix Bunz, Amy Spears). The Chicago Outfit, Brewcity and Burning River all contribute one skater (Bloody Elle, High D Voltage and Ivanna Destroya, respectively). Live on DNN courtesy of Naptown Roller Girls. 7pm Eastern, Saturday.
WCR Fury @ NRG Warning Belles: For the second weekend in a row, Windy City sends a local team out to do battle with a crew from a regional rival. Last weekend the Manic Attackers defeated Madison’s Unholy Rollers; this weekend, two-time WCR local champs The Fury, led by Kola Loka, take on Naptown’s B-team the Warning Belles. Live on DNN courtesy of Naptown Roller Girls. 5:30pm Eastern, Saturday.
Northeast Ohio @ Fort Wayne: Both teams start their 2012 WFTDA interleague action in this one; Fort Wayne is currently 14th in the North Central while relatively new NEO is ranked 22nd in the region. NEO played their first WFTDA action in 2011 and went 2-4. Fort Wayne has been WFTDA since mid 2007 but hasn’t been able to break out of the mid-to-high teens in their region. Last year FWDG went 5-6 in WFTDA play, though 4 of those losses came by fewer than 30 points. Live on DNN courtesy of Fort Wayne Derby Girls. 6pm Eastern, Saturday.
In intraleague action on DNN, Rose City opens their season with a doubleheader: Heartless Heathers vs Guns n Rollers followed by Break Neck Betties vs High Rollers. That action, presented by Rose City Rollers, kicks off at 5:45pm Pacific (8:45 Eastern) on Saturday.
Minnesota has a doubleheader of their own, but this one is a season-ender, with their league championship between the Dagger Dolls (3-0) and defending champs Rockits (2-1); there’s a third-place undercard between the Garda Belts (1-2) and Atomic Bombshells (0-3). That action is presented by Minnesota Rollergirls and starts at 7:30 Central (8:30 Eastern) on Saturday. Check out Garrison Killer’s in-depth preview on the MNRG site.
