Under the Helmet: Interview with Flo Rider

flo-riderFlo Rider was just a rookie when she won her first Ivy King Cup.

It was early June of 2013 and The Fury capped off an undefeated season by beating the Manic Attackers 211-186. Just under two years later, Flo Rider is now one of the captains of The Fury as the ladies in orange get set to take on the Hell's Belles for the home season championship March 28.

"It's such an amazing team," Flo said. "We really pride ourselves on being a unit."

Even before she knew anything about roller derby, Flo Rider knew she wanted to be in Chicago. She's been teaching math at one of Chicago's premier high schools, Northside College Prep (where she also coaches varsity volleyball), for 13 years.

"It's such a great place to be, with amazing teachers and students," she said. "We have phenomenal kids."

But when she was looking for teaching jobs in Chicago, Flo Rider didn't necessarily plan to end up at Northside.

"I literally applied to every high school in Chicago," she said.

Between derby, teaching and coaching, Flo doesn't have a whole lot of spare time to relax. But when she gets it, she tries to take full advantage.

"Derby is sometimes my relaxation," she said. "But I definitely like the nights when I don't have to do a thing."

Flo Rider was one of the original fans of The Fury and the Windy City Rollers. She'd already seen several bouts when she started Derby Lite in 2011. She had never been on roller skates before, but that didn't deter her.

"I thought, 'Why not try,'" she said.

It wasn't long before Flo made the jump from Derby Lite to Windy City. She joined the Haymarket Rioters in July 2011, was drafted by The Fury in April of 2012 and made Second Wind in February 2015.

Flo's ready to take on the Belles, who she said she respects as a team. But that respect didn't stop her from talking a very mild form of trash.

"I think they might be a little cocky because they just beat us (235-110 on Feb. 17)," she said.

Watch Flo Rider and The Fury take on the Hell's Belles for the Ivy King Cup at 6 p.m. March 28 at the UIC Pavilion.

I Am Flo Rider. I Am The Fury. I Am Roller Derby.
