The first annual State Wars Roller Derby Tournament, held November 21-23 in Daytona Beach, Florida, featured top skaters from across the country including seven skaters from the Brewcity Bruisers who competed for Team Wisconsin. Captained by Grace Killy, Team Wisconsin featured her Shevil Knevil and BCB All-Star teammates Puss N’ Boots, Skittle, and Scooter; Crazy 8s and BCB All-Stars Latina Heat and The Other White Meat; and Maiden Milwaukee’s Thunderpants.
State Wars is the property of iDerby LLC and is run by its director, Jeremy “Streak” Strecker, who is also a member of Team USA men’s roller derby. According to the tournament’s web site, its mission is to give participants the chance to represent their state in a highly competitive tournament that pulls from geographic regions rather than from super teams formed across state lines.
Tryouts were held this past spring, creating men’s and women’s teams in the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and several Canadian provinces. More than 50 state women vied for the 20 Team Wisconsin roster spots.
Ultimately, 19 women’s teams competed in the tournament. Team Wisconsin beat Oklahoma (317-74), Arkansas (184-127), and Hawaii (258-42), and lost twice to Illinois (229-162 and 294-133), just missing the bracket for the final day. Colorado won the women’s championship by beating Texas (307-123).
“State Wars was a fantastic experience and a great inaugural event for Team Wisconsin,” said Killy. “It’s always fun to play with skaters that you know from other leagues. The team came together extremely well and we had a great weekend overall.”
Dr. Eric Pifel of the Orthopedic Institute of Wisconsin and the Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital was a proud sponsor of Team Wisconsin.
