Southampton City Rollers Freshmeat Intake 2017

For a limited time only, SC*R will be opening its doors to new members. Monday the 3rd of April will be the first date of our new Fresh Meat course, lasting 12 weeks. Please note that we will not be accepting new participants after the course has begun.

As a condition of entry, we ask that all new skaters are able to demonstrate that they can skate 1 lap unaided (approximately 35 metres) in order to participate in the programme. It can be as fast or slow as you feel comfortable with, but it is essential in order for you to access the rest of the course.

It’s only the very basics; but you will need LOTS of determination, focus and team spirit. If you bring the drive, we can give you the rest.

Please remember to bring the following items…

  • Quad skates (these must be roller derby specific, such as the Riedell R3 or Suregrip Rebel)
  • Kneepads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouth guard
  • Helmet
  • Proof of age (you MUST be over 18 years of age)

These are compulsory in order to participate. If you wish to wear ‘basic’ quad skates during the taster sessions, you may; however, you will NOT be able to proceed through our Fresh Meat training without boots designed for roller derby.

Please bring a bottle of water, too… You’ll need it!

Due to the extreme nature of roller derby, please remember that there is no room for spectators in the hall, including children.

What are the taster sessions?

You are invited to participate in two sessions with SC*R, free of charge. You will still need ALL of the items listed above. These sessions are a chance for you to try our training without commitment. Please let us know in advance that you wish to attend.

So, what happens after the taster sessions?

If you enjoy the taster session and decide to join the Southampton City Rollers, you will need to pay a monthly sub of £30 in order to access our training and join the league.

Your first ‘official’ training session will, therefore, be the third time that you skate with us. Only those who have paid the £30 sub will be able to attend. If you don’t pay/stop paying, we will assume that your SC*R journey has ended and you shall be removed from the register. In this instance, you would not be able to re-join the team until a future intake.

Payment details will be in a separate correspondence.

Where and when do you train?

Our Fresh Meat training sessions are Mondays at Toynbee School (7.30 – 10pm). This will incorporate 1 hour of off-skates training and an hour and a half of on-skates training. Please bring your trainers!

Our Main League training session is on Saturdays at River Park Leisure Centre. The Fresh Meat session will be the first hour, 9am – 10am. Our more advanced skaters will then continue to train until midday; we strongly encourage our Fresh Meat to stick around spectate. There will often be ways for you to help.

Skaters should aim to attend at least 75% of both our Saturday and Monday training sessions. Our training schedule is very structured and you won’t want to miss out!

What happens in the training sessions?

We teach you how to play roller derby!

But before the gameplay starts, you must complete the WFTDA Minimum Skills Assessment.

You can read more about the WFTDA Minimum Skills in the attached PDF.

Our training sessions will teach you everything included in requirements, across 12 weeks. This will conclude with 2 weeks of testing, to assess your ability in line with the WFTDA requirements.

What if I don’t pass?

Don’t worry! Not everyone will pass in 12 weeks. We’ll re-start the cycle again, and you can keep training with us in the meantime. It won’t be unusual to need to take the course perhaps several times. Everyone progresses at their own rate and nobody’s going to eject you from the league for not passing ‘quickly enough’.

What if I DO pass?

Once you have passed Minimum Skills, we will involve you in ‘scrims’, where we practice roller derby in training. This is FULL CONTACT! You may be able to scrim in training *before* you pass, as per the Coaching Committee’s discretion. However, you won’t be able to play a public ‘bout’ until you’ve completed the Minimum Skills. You will also be able to access the full 3 hours of training with our Main League on Saturday mornings.

We look forward to meeting you at the Taster Session. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us at .
