Skater of the Week: Aimee Burns

Name: Aimee Burns

Team: MSRD Riveters

Number: 26

Hometown: Northern Virginia, but grew up all over the world as a military brat

Time Playing Roller Derby: Since August 2014, all with MSRD

What brought you to Roller Derby? I went to the Battle of Richmond roller derby bout and saw that Mother State was having a Derby 101 seminar – I had always been interested in derby, so I figured I’d give it a shot!

Why do you continue to play Roller Derby? I’m still a novice and learning the fundamentals of derby, and I plan to play derby as long as I’m able.

What do you do outside of Roller Derby? I own a dog walking and pet sitting business called Play Paws, and we’ve been serving the Richmond area since April 2014. In my spare time, I like to play video games, bake/decorate cakes and cookies, crochet and snowboard (but not all at the same time).

Favorite Derby Moment: My first game was pretty exciting – my parents both came to the game from out of town, and I had some friends travel from DC to come see the bout. I was really nervous the whole day leading up to it, but once we got to the rink it turned to pure excitement.

Fun Facts About Aimee: I was raised in military family so we traveled all over the world while I was growing up – my parents were stationed in Japan when I was born, and I can speak a little bit of Japanese. We were also stationed in Hawaii for a few years when I was in elementary school – I learned to play the ukulele while we lived there and have been playing ever since.
