Skater Spotlight: K-Tality

Making her debut as team captain with the Rogue Scholars on 11 April will be…the one and only K-Tality!

ktalityHow many years have you been skating?
5 years

How did you get involved in roller derby?
I, like so many of us, saw the movie Whip It. Then I saw a bout in Brisbane, and then joined my local league at the time, NRRD

What is your favourite position?

What was your best “lightbulb” moment?
Doing a bootcamp, learning some jammer defence. Everything fell into place, and I did something awesome that I’d never tried before. Felt great, and it was amazing to hear the coach, Scald Eagle say I was awesome(!!!!).

Do you have a pre-bout routine?
Getting bacon and eggs, listening to my getting pumped mix. I always like to get there early so I have time to get ready at my own pace.

Do you have a favourite song to get amped pre-bout?
Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen.

What was your favourite bout moment?
Playing with my hero Scald Eagle, and getting words of encouragement from the bench.

How did you choose your derby name?
My awesome best friend named me after a comic book character – Fatality, a character who is a Star Sapphire in the DC Comics universe.

What skate set-up do you have/Do you have any gear recommendations?
I’m currently on Riedell Vixens with Atom wheels. My biggest recommendation is to invest in good knee pads- I’m in love with my 187s, very sturdy knee pads that keep me together.

What is one piece of advice you would give a freshie?
Persevere! You’ll fall down. A LOT. Just keep getting back up.

Did you play sport before derby?
Field hockey and gymnastics.

Who are your derby heroes and why?
Scald Eagle and Stefanie Mainey. Luckily I got to meet both of them in January this year, and played on a potluck team with them. Eagle is very much the kind of jammer I would like to be, especially as we are both gangly jammers. Mainey is an amazing, calm skater and I really admire that. They both have different skating styles and there is so much to learn from both.

How would you sum up your derby playing style in three words?
Fast, agile, fluid.
