PREVIEW – Women’s T3 South – Gameday 1

The opening game of Tier 3 Regional South for the Women’s British Roller Derby Championships features Dorset Roller Girls vs Big Bucks High Rollers. Currently ranked 74th in Europe, Dorset ended 2014 with third place in Heartland 2014 South West Division. Their last game was a 225-94 victory over Wiltshire Roller Derby and they had a season record of 6 wins out of 10 games in their busiest season yet, in 2014.

Currently ranked 63rd in Europe and 30th in UKRDA, Big Bucks High Rollers finished third overall in the Heartland Finals in 2014. Their last victory was a 102-89 victory in the third place play off at Heartland Finals over Milton Keynes Roller Derby, having beaten Oxford in a last jam nailbiter in the quarters and lost to Cambridge in the semis earlier in the day. Their winning record in 2014 was 7 wins out of 9 games.

The teams have never met before. Flat Track Stats gives a 52% probability of a Dorset victory with a ratio of 42:41 in the European rankings if Dorset were the home team, but 68% probability of a Big Bucks victory with a ratio of 17:14 if Big Bucks were the home team (it’s a neutral venue for these teams), suggesting that Big Bucks may have the edge. This will not be a sanctioned UKRDA game.

In the second game, hosts Plymouth City Roller Girls face Severn Roller Torrent. Ranked 72nd in Europe and 16th in UKRDA, Plymouth won 8 out of 10 games in 2014, beating Hereford Roller Girls and Milton Keynes Roller Derby on Heartland Finals day, but losing in the final to Cambridge Rollerbillies 184-59, as they finished second overall in the Heartland Series.

Severn are ranked 78th in Europe and 34th in UKRDA. With a winning record of 5 out of 8 games in 2014, the 2013 Heartland Champions last game was a 163-134 defeat to Milton Keynes Roller Derby in the Heartland Finals Day Quarter Final in November.

The teams have met once before, in last year’s Heartland Series, where Severn beat Plymouth 132-123 on their way to the 2014 Heartland South West divisional title. Flat Track Stats tips a Plymouth victory with 66% probability and with a ratio of 44:37 in the European rankings, and at 92% probability and with a ratio of 65:33 in the UKRDA rankings. This will be a UKRDA sanctioned game.
