INDIANAPOLIS, IN â€“ Utilizing a ledger of eight different scorers and a solid veteran blocking schematic wall in front, 7NC Brewcity defeated 10NC Ohio 104-78 in the opening round of â€œMonumental Mayhem,â€ the WFTDA North Central region playoffs at the Indiana Convention Center.
With the win, the Bruisers advance to face NC#2 Detroit this afternoon at 5:30 pm Eastern. Meanwhile, OHRG falls to the consolation bracket to face the loser of Fridayâ€™s nightcap of NC #4 Naptown vs. NC#5 Cincinnati.
The first 2011 meeting of the two North Centrals was characterized by a low-scoring first half. Following a bout-opening two-pointer by Ohioâ€™s HellionBOI, Brewcity scored back-to-back four-pointers by Carrie A. Hacksaw and Zotay to build an 8-2 lead four minutes in. OHRGâ€™s Kitty Liqourbottom notched a five- pointer to draw the Buckeyes to 8-7 one jam later.
Milwaukeeâ€™s Best then went on a 17-1 run in the next four jams, building a slight advantage. Zotay collected five at 21:30 to give Brewcity a 12-7 edge and later scored ten at 17:10 to tap the keggersâ€™ lead to 22-8. Brewcityâ€™s Scooter added three at 14:30, extending the lead to 25-8.
HelloinBOI broke the Ohio scoring drought at 12:10, collecting five and pulling OHRG to 30-13. Wendra Woman added five more for Ohio two minutes later, cutting the gap to 30-19.
Brewcity would counter with a 14-0 run, punctuated by Strykherâ€™s 12-pointer scored with 4:00 left in the first half, which gave the rollers from Milwaukee a 44-19 lead.
Undaunted, Ohio went on an 11-0 run to conclude the first half. HellionBOI netted eight as the first half expired, which saw Brewcity sport a 44-30 lead at intermission.
Ohio would start the second half with a quick sprint and pull to within five points. Wendra Womanâ€™s seven-pointer was followed by three from HellionBOI and four by Liqourbottom, whittling the Brewcity lead to 49-44 with 23:58 remaining.
Like a skilled set of pugilists, both squads would trade jabs as the second half progressed, which saw Brewcity maintain a 58-54 lead with 18:45 left.
The Bruisers began a 29-0 run midway through the final frame. The veteran wall of Brewcity blockers helped Strykher collect nine points at the 16:16 mark to extend the advantage to 70-54. Then following a four-pointer by Hacksaw, Brewcityâ€™s High D Voltage â€“ in her first jam of the morning â€“ posted a 13-0 strike at 13:20 to give extend the lead to 87-54.
Brewcity also showed their firepower in defense as the half progressed, holding Ohio to one point in a span of 12 minutes of clock time. Brewcity went on to outscore to Ohio 60-48 in the second half to preserve the win and advance to the match-up against Detroit. Stryker paced the Bruisers unofficially with 29 points.
