Men’s European Cup Recap 2014
17. December 2014 23:34
Southern Discomfort swept to victory in the Men’s European Cup 2014 with three victories from three to bring home the gold. The event was the first sanctioned MRDA tournament to be held outside North America and was hosted in Newcastle with teams coming from England, Wales and France to compete over the weekend.
First Up So Disco faced a spirited Crash Test Brummies side who had stepped in with short notice as replacements in the tournament. SDRD were faster out of the blocks putting on almost 100 points before the Brummies could score but they were a constant threat especially with Rex Tangle in their ranks. A hard fought encounter ensued but with the advantage already established Southern Discomfort eventually ran out winners.
Final Score: SDRD: 439 – CTB: 43
The next matchup saw SDRD paired with Tournament hosts Tyne and Fear who had dispatched Manchester’s New Wheeled Order in their first game. This was a physical encounter with no team willing to give an inch. Tyne and Fear had the home crowd behind them and were willing to go toe to toe from the first whistle. So Disco kept their heads and managed to put some space between the two sides after the half, bringing home a deserved win and with it a place in the final.
Final Score SDRD: 275 – T&F: 86
The cup final was played out against an impressive South Wales Silures team who had been upsetting the odds all weekend by knocking out a strong Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder team in their first game and then taking out last year’s MERDC winners Toulouse Quad Guards. The Silures provided a test with their strong walls and four man jammer rotation in the first half. SDRD called on their experience to turn the screw towards the half time. SDRD maintained their concentration for the final period to round off the game and bring home the championship.
Final Score: SDRD: 370 – SWS: 66
