Meet your newest Atlanta Rollergirls!

The 2015 season opener is just about a week away, and you can feel the excitement in the air. But nobody is more excited than this year’s group of rookies and transfer skaters, who will be skating with Atlanta for the very first time on February 21st. We asked each of them a few questions about themselves and the upcoming season.

Maul E. Cule

Name: Maul E. Cule #602 (transfer)

Teams: Sake Tuyas, Rumble Bs

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

I have been skating since I was in kindergarten. I heard about roller derby in 2012 and fell in love immediately. I grew up playing basketball and volleyball so it is great to be involved in a team sport again.

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

I get to be on skates.

How did you come up with your name?

I am a chemist when not playing derby.

What’s your signature move?

Umm…it’s a secret.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

They have all been super supportive. Even after breaking my ankle, they took care of me and pushed me to continue skating.

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

Eat some food, listen to some music, and hit some people.

AmsterDAM

Name: AmsterDAM #420 (transfer)

Teams: Denim Demons, Rumble Bs

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

I love being part of a team and when I graduated from college I missed that. I also love working towards goals and staying active!

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

Watching amazing athletes compete then getting to go home and practice with them! Not many sports offer that! It’s awesome!

What’s your proudest derby moment?

Skating against Rose City in D1.

How did you come up with your name?

This is my favorite question for obvious reasons! Actually, when I used to live in Italy, friends used to call me Dutch because I did not have darker Mediterranean looks…lol. I usually stuck out like a sore thumb! Lol! And Amsterdam had a great kickass derby quality to it!

Opportunity for smack talk: how are you and your team going to kick ass this season?

I’m not much of a trash talker, I usually get tongue tied.

What’s your signature move?

Nothing special, just work hard!

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

I’m very lucky to have a strong support system from my family. They put up with missing family functions and smelly pads! Just to boast about having a derby girl in the family! I’m very lucky!

BeKevorkian

BeKevorkian #187 (rookie)

Teams: Apocalypstix, Jukes of Hazzard

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

The never-ending supply of new skills and physical challenges you face and then master while playing the sport, the camaraderie you find on a team made up of strong women, and my absolute favorite thing is going to be kicking ass on the track in 2015 with the Apocalypstix.

What’s your proudest derby moment?

Do I have to pick just one? Getting drafted to the Apocalypstix and getting MVP Jammer in the Rookie Expo playing with the Jukes of Hazzard.

How did you come up with your name?

It’s a blend of my first name, Rebecca, and Dr. Jack Kevorkian’s last name. It’s pronounced bek-ah-voor-key-an.

Name: Baller Shot Caller #143 (transfer)

Teams: Toxic Shocks, DSDG

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

I skated for fun as a kid and loved it! Roller derby has been the thing to keep me skating. I continue to play derby in an effort to be the best I can be. When I reach that, maybe I will retire. Or maybe not! :)

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

It’s an all women’s competitive full contact sport run by the skaters!

What’s your proudest derby moment?

Making Team USA.

How did you come up with your name?

I feel like my alter ego is a baller who is calling the shots. A friend of mine reminded me of the 90’s song “Wanna Be a Baller”.

Opportunity for smack talk: how are you and your team going to kick ass this season?

Me and my team plan on being the strongest, smartest and most unified this year. That combination is going to make us deadly!

What’s your signature move?

Booty blocking people in the gut or dead legging them!!!! Muhahahaha!

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

Everyone thought it was perfect for me!

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

Getting in the zone with some good music and pumping up my teammates.

Anything else you want Atlanta to know?

Be ready for some fireworks this year! Atlanta Rollergirls are bringing it hard in 2015!

Dani Doom

Name: Dani Doom #77 (transfer)

Teams: Apocalypstix, Rumble Bs

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

My friend moved in with Mosh-ya Brady when she still had a Mohawk and I found out she was playing roller derby, both of which I thought were really cool. I was at UGA at the time and wasn’t active in sports like I had been in high school, so I went to a Classic City Roller Girls practice and it was on from there! I keep skating because when I’m on the track it is so much fun and it’s like everything else in my life just disappears. It’s pretty cool to get that far into something.

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

The people and the competitiveness.

What’s your proudest derby moment?

I have a few. One is getting voted tournament MVP for my team and by my team at the 2013 playoffs in Asheville. I was skating with the Nashville Rollergirls at the time.

How did you come up with your name?

Dani has been a longtime nickname since my real name is Danielle, and Doom just fit with it. Plus, love it when the crowd goes “Doooooooooooom.” It gets me excited to skate!

Opportunity for smack talk: how are you and your team going to kick ass this season?

Well, I have a broken leg right now, so I may want to go easy on the smack talk. However, the Stix are gonna dominate, so just know that!

What’s your signature move?

Not sure I have one. Sometimes I jump the apex when jamming. When blocking I really like to swing off my wall behind it and just own the jammer. On my good days my lateral movement is pretty good for that.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

They’re supportive. My boyfriend loves it. My mom is ok with it, but a huge fan of me in anything I do. My dad is a sports writer, so he enjoys sports period! And my 7 year old brother is pretty mesmerized by the whole thing. He loves to skate.

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

I’m gonna go crazy screaming for the STIX!!! Stix Life, baby! Come cheer with me and my broken self!!!

Jerez Dot Gif

Name: Jerez Dot Gif #945 (rookie)

Teams: Sake Tuyas, Jukes of Hazzard

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

A friend of mine introduced me to roller derby a few years ago, when I didn’t know even how to skate. I discovered a new passion and that’s what keeps me skating.

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

Derby is not a routine, it’s different every time. I love the challenge, it’s that kind of feeling that makes you feel alive. Derby is the only way that I can enjoy to do any sport or something healthy for myself.

What’s your proudest derby moment?

Getting into the team. I cried. I always cry.

How did you come up with your name?

I really like my last name (sounds like a wine variety) and I like animated gifs as well. Since I learned how to make a gif, I love to make them, and I can spend my day just doing that.

What’s your signature move?

I don’t know if I have a signature move, but working on it.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

Friends, support I guess. I think my mom still has no idea what it is all about.

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

Breakfast, big breakfast.

Anything else you want Atlanta to know?

I miss my city and I’m not from here, but I feel so lucky to be part of this here in Atlanta. I admire these girls. I love this city. At my age I found a lot of cool things to explore. Living here I feel like a teenager.

High Jinxxx

Name: High Jinxxx #312 (transfer)

Teams: Apocalypstix, Jukes of Hazzard

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

What made me start skating was someone (an ex-boyfriend) telling me that I couldn’t do it. That I wasn’t cut out for derby. I had a really shaky start…. I even thought at times that I couldn’t do it. I remember sitting in my car and telling myself, “Maybe I shouldn’t do this. I won’t be ever able to bout.” I walked into practice the next day to quit, but I stubbornly put my skates on and never looked back. I had to start at the bottom and climb my way up and I still continue to climb. I think what keeps me going is the thrill of it all. The push and drive to be better every time I hit that track. I want to come off of it, look at my coach, and say, “Did I just pull that off?”

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

The derby universe. When you play roller derby, it isn’t just about you. It’s about the team, the players, and the community. I love it when I step onto the track on bout day and feel the energy of the arena and you know that everything in your derby universe came together at that exact moment. It’s chilling.

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

Let’s just say that I played roller derby for about 3 months before telling my parents and it took about a margarita and a half for my mom on my first bout day to be okay with it. I also was in a sorority when I began my derby journey. Most of my sorority sisters were on the fence about it, but a whole group came on bout day and loved it.

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

Here is the schedule: Wake up at noon. Play with my cats for about 5 hours. Derby time.

Ramblin' Wrecker

Name: Ramblin’ Wrecker #14 (transfer)

Teams: Apocalypstix, Jukes of Hazzard

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

I started skating because I saw a Texas Rollergirls bout in Austin in 2012; I joined their rec league less than a month later. I keep skating for the incredible community of people that I’ve found in derby- when I moved from Texas to Atlanta last year I didn’t really know anyone on ARG, but I already knew that they would become my new family.

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

I have played sports my whole life and derby as a whole is hands down the most supportive team environment that I’ve been in. People have encouraged and helped me since the first day I went to a rec practice and could barely skate in a circle all the way up to learning skills from international level talents like Wild Cherri and Baller Shot Caller.

How did you come up with your name?

My name is a tribute to Georgia Tech. I “got out” of there with a BSME in 2011, but I’m still a “Ramblin Wreck[er] from Georgia Tech and a helluva engineer!”

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

Most of my friends were excited (and not at all surprised). My family was supportive- my dad actually helped me come up with my name- though my mom was worried that I’d get a bunch of tattoos. It’s only one so far, mom!

Marzipain

Name: Marzipain #5 (rookie)

Teams: Denim Demons, Jukes of Hazzard

What made you start skating, and what makes you keep skating?

I started skating because I wanted to see if I could learn the skills to play roller derby and become an Atlanta Rollergirl. I keep skating for pure enjoyment of the sport and there is always something new to learn!

Opportunity for smack talk: how are you and your team going to kick ass this season?

I am looking forward to this season and what it entails. I think with the team shake up the fans are in for an action-packed season and hopefully some friendly smack talk to get us revved up and excited for derby!!

How did your friends and family react when you told them you started playing roller derby?

My friends and family were surprised and excited to come see what its all about!!

How will you get ready to rumble on the first bout day of the season?

I think I will dance it out to get ready for the first bout! Ear buds in dancing around to clear my head, not sure what music but it will be all decades and genres!

Paige Notfound

Name: Paige Notfound #404 (rookie)

Teams: Toxic Shocks, Jukes of Hazzard

What’s your favorite thing about derby?

I like all the shoving! I used to play rugby, which has a lot of shoving, but derby has EVEN MORE.

What’s your proudest derby moment?

Realizing I had passed my last fresh meat assessment and would be able to play derby this season. (I cried too!)

How did you come up with your name?

I’m a web developer. Who doesn’t like a good HTTP pun?

Opportunity for smack talk: how are you and your team going to kick ass this season?

The Toxic Shocks have this mind-melding team chemistry that you just can’t fake, and we’re going to take it all the way to champs!
