Manchester Roller Derby’s ladies B-team, the Furies, were not content just sitting back and watching their big sisters the CheckerBroads take on Brighton last week, so they are heading down South themselves this Saturday 29 November to take on their furthest opponents yet, the rising talent of Portsmouth Roller Wenches’ B-team.
How does their brand new captain Jen and Tonic feel leading her team into what will hopefully be another Northern victory? We managed to grab a few minutes with her before they begin their long journey to Pompey.

Hello Jen and Tonic. Congratulations on being voted captain of the Furies. For those that don’t know who the Furies are, can you tell us a little about them?
Furies are MRD’s women’s B team, a formidable force powered by cake and the blood of our opponents but also the nicest people you’ll ever meet.
Can you tell us a bit about you? How did you discover derby, and what do you do outside of it?
I went to my first bout whilst living in Melbourne and I didn’t have a clue what was going on, I just knew I wanted to have a go! I was instantly in awe of these kick-ass women on track. When I got back to Manchester and discovered MRD and the Zero to Hero programme I signed myself up and haven’t looked back since. Life outside of derby is mostly talking about/ preparing for/ recovering from derby, but I also do a bit of real grown up stuff every now and then like working and laundry and such.
How are you feeling ahead of captaining your first Furies game?
I’m feeling preeeeetty nervous to be honest but I know we’ve all been working really hard in training recently and it is definitely showing. It’s going to be a tough game but I have every confidence that we are going out there fighting.
Are there any skaters fans should keep an eye out for?
Having been up against each of them during training I couldn’t single out an individual menace, they’re all pretty awesome.
What are your away game packing tips?
Do it the night before, have a panic the next day and re-pack it anyway, then maybe just triple check before you leave the house…
