On May 3rd, the Darlins held their second home bout of the season against the Muscogee Rollergirls. In the first half, Marietta used their walling skills and quick-footed jammers to pick up a quick lead in the first three jams. Strong blocking by Charlie Chaos, Mega M’Day, Biblio Blitzkrieg, Vexing Violet, and Motleigh Cruiser helped minimize the Muscogee jammers’ scoring opportunities.
Yoda Lady Who, Zinga, Dead By Dawn, SpanxYou, and Dropkick Diva also worked hard to form walls and contain the opposing jammers. Thanks to quick footwork and persistence by jammers Dolce Vita, Eccentrica Gigglekicks, Maul E. Cule, and Vexing Violet, Marietta managed to come out in front at the end of the first half (Marietta 72. Muscogee 48). Muggsy Rogue also put points on the board for Marietta, but sustained an injury in the first half.
In the second half, Muscogee came out fighting (um, figuratively speaking, guys). Their jammers managed to squeak through Marietta’s walls and pick up points. Marietta didn’t roll over and quit, however. They continued to score points, although a few power jams in Muscogee’s favor did put them in the lead. Blocker penalties for Marietta also impaired their attempts to regain the lead.
Final score was 152- 133 in Muscogee’s favor. MVP blockers were Charlie Chaos (MDD) and Handislap (Muscogee). MVP jammers were Maul E. Cule (MDD) and Tootsie Roll PopHer (Muscogee). Want to see a rematch? Feel like taking a road trip? MDD will be travelling to Columbus, GA on June 21 to face the Muscogee Rollergirls again.
On May 17th, the Darlins travelled to Concord, NC, to take on the Kannapolis Rollergirls. At their last meeting in Marietta, GA, the Kannapolis ladies took the victory, so MDD was looking to even things up a bit this time around.
In the first half, Marietta came out strong, picking up the lead quickly thanks to Maul E. Cule, Chimera Kai, and Vexing Violet. The MDD blockers held the Kannapolis jammers scoreless for the first six jams, thanks to Motleigh Cruiser, Spanx You, Zig Zag, and Hell2Pae. A couple of unfortunate power jams in Kannapolis’s favor (combined with a few blocker penalties) bumped Kannapolis into the lead with fifteen minutes to go in the first half. However, blocking efforts of Yoda Lady Who, Animatrix, Zinga, Kittenacious, and Betty Ford Cynic, combined with smart jamming by Marietta (and a successful apex jump from Eccentrica Gigglekicks!) kept the margin to a mere nine points going into halftime.
In the second half, MDD was hampered by penalties. Several power jams, combined with blocker penalties widened Kannpolis’s lead to thirty, but Marietta wasn’t giving up. Unfortunately, when the game clock expired, Marietta was on the wrong end of a 163-112 score. Next time…
Final score was Kannapolis 163, Marietta 112. MVPs for Marietta were Eccentrica Gigglekicks (jammer) and Hell2Pae (blocker). MVPs for Kannapolis were Reckless (jammer) and Sour Hour (blocker).
