Highlights in March from the Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) included its eminent league staving a hard charge from the team positioned two slots behind, early tremors from a San Diego-based squad and pushes by those that aim to crack the Top 20.
Top-ranked Your Mom Men’s Roller Derby, the MRDA’s three-time defending champ, picked up a pair of sanctioned wins early in the month. On March 7, the Iowans bested #3 New York Shock Exchange, 164-125, at its hosted track in West Des Moines. Down 82-64 at intermission, the locals utilized a knuckle-busting defense to outscore NYSE in the second period, 100-61, to earn the win.
Combined with a 582-2 thumping of #29 Capital City that same day, Your Mom extended its MRDA-sanctioned winning streak to 24 games.
Meanwhile, NYSE finished the Des Moines trek 1-1 after beating Capital City, 761-3, which set a new MRDA benchmark for widest winning differential.
Unranked San Diego Aftershocks, who became MRDA-christened in February, posted a pair of impressive sanctioned road wins at the How the West Was Won invitational. An eye-opening 195-168 victory over #9 Arizona on March 7 at was followed by a 182-107 triumph over #11 Drive-By City the next day. The two toppers pushed the Californians’ MRDA-sanctioned game ledger to 3-0 and many will be giving close watch to see if the franchise can debut in the governing body’s Top 10 when the next set of rankings are released during the summer.
Arizona managed to finish March even as they defeated Drive-By, 274-124, on March 8.
Elsewhere in the Top 25, #22 Quadfathers Men’s Roller Derby netted its first MRDA duke of the new campaign with a solid 140-119 win over #21 Capital District Trauma Authority on March 1.
In sanctioned action featuring unranked leagues, South Wales Silures racked its second win of the calendar year, and fifth overall since becoming MRDA-affiliated, with a 200-157 victory over Lincolnshire on March 7. Jersey Boys Derby improved to 2-0 in sanctioned play with a 503-44 duke over Vermont on March 21. The next day, Philadelphia topped Vermont, 367-93, to pick up its first-ever MRDA-sanctioned win.

Also in March, the MRDA added four new leagues to its ranks, expanding the governing body’s membership to 58 international leagues: Toronto Men’s Roller Derby, Austin Anarchy, Sydney City Smash and Denver Ground Control.
Sanctioned games in the upcoming month include numerous season openers for Top 20 teams. On April 4, #8 Mass Maelstrom hosts #22 Quadfathers while #25 Sioux City Kornstalkers battles the unranked Big O Roller Bros in Omaha, NE. On April 11, #17 Cincinnati Battering Rams travels to the Sunshine State to face #12 Magic City Misfits and unranked Tampa Bay. On April 18, #19 Carolina Wreckingballs hosts Philadelphia while across the pond in the United Kingdom, unranked Manchester and Barrow tangle.
