G1: USA 314 Finland 0

Jonathan R became the first man to put on a Team USA jammer star in anger, and put up a 25-0 powerjam to open things up. Strong defence and just-enough offense in a 3-1 set-up for Team USA held the Finns scoreless as the USA raced away. The first 150 points took a little over 12 minutes. The crowd grew increasingly restless as the USA held the Finns scoreless, with 0-0 calloffs particularly unpopular.

The USA jammers did have occasional problems when penalties in their pack meant they didn’t get any offensive support. While that wasn’t enough to get Finland close to a breakthrough, it did cut into the Americans’ scoring rate. That rate was upped towards the end as Finnish legs started to go and they sent a succession of jammers to the box, and the USA passed 300 inside the final two minutes courtesy of Scott Slamilton. The USA completed the shutout moments later, 314-0.

G2: USA 217, Wales 13

A gritty performance from a well-marshalled Wales team saw them slow the USA’s scoring significantly more than Finland managed in the opening exchanges. They stretched the USA’s defences thin and forced the Americans into a higher gear than they rested in for the Finland game, but the Welshmen still couldn’t find a way through.

Rapturous applause did greet the few occasions the Welsh jammers broke the pack but that was nothing compared to the roof-lifting noise when Roll Call got lead for Wales and scored two points to make it 173-2 with a little under eight minutes to go. The wheels then came off briefly for the USA as Binkley was boxed two jams later and Ashton took Wales into double figures.

Wales closed out the bout with a lead jammer call in the final minute–but no more points were forthcoming after a cut was called. It finished 217-13.

G3: Wales 107, Finland 35

The abbreviated red group finished with Wales and Finland facing off after both being beaten heavily by the USA. Wales’ stronger performance against the USA made them favourites against the Finns, but ten minutes passed before Wales found themselves in the lead courtesy of back-to-back jammer penalties for the Finns.

A third jammer penalty meant that Wales had doubled up on Finland’s total by the halfway mark with a 50-24 lead. The Welsh maintained that 2:1 ratio into the final two minutes before finishing the bout on two big powerjams and closing out a 107-35 win to progress to Saturday’s quarterfinals in second place.
