No. 7 Dash
This skater is phenomenal to watch on track. It’s no surprise as she manages to go to every available training session on offer – even if it’s not a WARD one! She’s welcomed by all leagues as she’s a genuine delight to chat to, skate with, and be around. She’s a real all-rounder, and though she’ll tell you she doesn’t jam, just watch her – she’s got some mad agility on 8 wheels! She skates for the WoTS and the Screams, she’s crafty both on and off the track (feel free to ask her about arm-knitting), your WARDian this month is Dash.
How did you get into Roller Derby?
My older brother started playing, so in true little sister style, I had to give it a go too. I started with PMD, found my way to WARD last October, and the rest is history.
What do you get out of Roller Derby?
I really enjoy team sports, and have the honour of skating with an amazing group of people whom I have so much respect for, both on and off the track. Plus, as well as being physically tough, it’s such a strategic game that half the time I don’t realise I’m actually working up a sweat! Which is great, especially since my last (unused) gym membership expired in 2007.
What has been the highlight of your skating career so far?
Being able to attend TGSS this year and represent WARD was a truly spectacular experience and definitely the highlight of my ‘derby career’ thus far. The fact that our next door neighbours in Adelaide were a certain crowd who go by the name of VRDL was just the icing on an already very sweet cake!
Most embarrassing moment?
Plenty, but losing balance and falling on my butt on a jam start before the whistle blew is pretty high up there.
Have you got any training tips?
You only get out what you put in, so be there, be present and give it 100%. And don’t let yourself get discouraged by all the things you may not know yet. The day that you think you know everything is the day that you stop learning!
What are your derby aspirations?
To keep enjoying this sport. And maybe one day change my name to Swish Cariboom?
Who would you nominate as the next WARDian of the Month?
Bubblin’ Squeaks, who is an amazing captain and leader, and such a pleasure to be around. She brings nothing but positive energy to the team and the league, and she’s an inspiration to anyone who knows her. Plus, she’s pretty kick ass out on the track!
