Hereford Roller Girls 204 – Swansea City Roller Derby B Team 108
Warm-up bout: Galactic Empire 188 – Rebel Alliance 148
Hereford Roller Girls’ Horror Bulls played Swansea City Roller Derby’s B Team in an impressive home game. The two teams met at Hereford Leisure Centre in a bout that ended 204 to 108, to Hereford. The team was led by Captain Turner #81 and Vice Captain Wild #59.
The bout kicked off with jammer Treble Maker #909 taking lead for Hereford. A strong wall of blockers held the Swansea jammer in the pack for a 10 point jam. Swansea fought back, with Turner being forced to call a jam after the opposing jammer followed her out of the pack. Tactical bridging from Gore Jes #247 kept the Hereford blockers in play, stopping the Swansea jammer from exiting the pack – this play saw Hereford reach 19 points, with Swansea still on 0. Several jams in and Swansea had 5 points on the board to Hereford’s 70. The game went into the half time, Hereford’s Horror Bulls 132, Swansea City B Team 17.
The second half opened with Hereford’s Turner on the jam line. Turner sliced through on the apex for lead. Swansea took full advantage of jammer penalties, and a power jam saw their score creeping up. Hereford soon hit the 200 point mark, with Swansea on 74. At only a minute and a half left to play the score had crept to 204 to 86. Swansea knew it was too late to win, but at this point both teams were fighting for the point difference! The final score was Hereford’s Horror Bulls 204, Swansea City B Team 108.
Horror Bulls’ Team Captain Becce Turner was delighted with the result. “What an amazing game! We were able to pull together everything we have been training for. We were low on numbers, but I think we kept running on the adrenaline of taking lead on the first jam and not looking back. I’m so proud of everyone, including our three freshies who took part in the mixed bout and made a win with Team Galactic Empire”.
The Hereford v Swansea B bout was part of a double header taking place at Hereford Leisure Centre on 4th May. The day was aptly titled ‘May The 4th Be With You’. A Star Wars themed warm-up bout ‘Galactic Empire vs Rebel Alliance’ took place before the main game. The warm-up bout featured rookie skaters from across the UK, including three from Hereford. It was a hard fought game, with a final score Galactic Empire 188, Rebel Alliance 148.
