First Bout Day of 2017!

On Saturday February 11th four teams from across the South West travelled to Plymouth to take part in the first game of the 2017 Roller Derby British Championships season T4 South. Hosted by Plymouth City Roller Derby (PCRD) at the University of St Mark and St John Sports Centre, the day was the start of a nationwide tournament for roller derby teams of all levels.

The first game of the day saw Reaper Roller Derby from Swansea on track against Severn Roller Torrent hailing from Gloucestershire. The teams were very evenly matched, with an incredibly close game as a result. Reaper Roller Derby ultimately skated their way to victory with a final score of 139 to 115.

PCRD, who are currently ranked 45th in the UKRDA (United Kingdom Roller Derby Association), then took to the track against Hereford Roller Derby. A nail biting game ensued with lead changes, big hits and smart jamming throughout seeing the first half of the game ending with Plymouth holding a 14 point lead. Strong team work from Hereford saw them pull back through the second half and go on to win with a convincing 173 points to 138.

The team were lucky enough to have award winning local comedian David Arnold to provide commentary on the day, with insights to the gameplay thanks to his dedicated following of the team through recent years and a lot of laughs for the audience!

Another focus on the day was to raise money for the team’s chosen charity, Devon Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services. The team successfully raised £109 via the raffle and cake sale on the day, and are proud to support a local charity providing help to those in need across Devon.

The British Championship season continues for PCRD on April 23rd in Cheltenham, as they meet Neath Port Talbot Roller Derby for the first time.
