February WARDian of the Month: Modern Warfare
25. February 2015 15:39
This month’s nominated WARDian has shown amazing dedication to WARD, working tirelessly behind the scenes to see us become a fully fledged WFTDA league. Our members have described her as always positive, approachable, and an inspiration to them.
WARDian of the Month for February is Modern Warfare. Congratulations Mods, and thank you.
How did you get into derby?
I saw a flyer at Rollerways. I was looking for something but I didn’t know it at the time. I had never played a sport before so I am very grateful that Roller Derby came naturally to me; I don’t think I would have stuck with it other wise.
What do you get out of derby?
Friendships, personal satisfaction and a sense of achievement. I want to be one of the best and its’ satisfying working towards that.
What has been the highlight of your skating career so far?
MVP against PRD B’s in 2011. It’s when I stopped feeling weak and useless. It did wonders for my confidence haha.
Most embarrassing moment?
I think after party Mods is pretty embarrassing. The beers go down way to fast and they seem to go straight to my head. It’s the time when I decide to talk to people I wouldn’t normally… But not in a good way, In a creepy “I know what you did on the weekend” kind of way.
Do you have any training tips?
The sooner you learn to fall flat on your face and recover, the better. Aim to be comfortable on your skates and the skills will come.
What are your derby aspirations?
Compete in TGSS in 2016 and be a valuable part of winning WARDs first game there.
Who would you nominate as next WARDian of the Month?
Whiskey Sour or Coca Rolla. I don’t think people realise how much dedication and love for Roller Derby and WARD these women have.
