You know our first 2014 Wardian of the Month, even if you think you don’t as she is the brains behind most of the bout promo art you see on posters, flyers, website and social media. Not only is she a graphics whiz, but she can whiz around the track in stellar fashion! A bit of an all rounder, don’t be surprised if you see her blocking the hell out of someone and later tearing past them wearing the star! As friendly as she is skilled, it’s no surprise to see her up here. I give you, the lovely Kit.

How did you get into Roller Derby?

I went to see the big interstate bout Across the Skate Divide between WA Roller Derby and South Sea Roller Derby and I just though it was amazing. Afterwards I got on the Internet and Googled roller derby and WARD popped up. I emailed them to see if they taught people how to play. They did of course and I started fresh meat.

What do you get out of Roller Derby?

Bruises like no other… but really it’s about friendship and athleticism for me. I’ll just throw in this quote that’s pretty cool…

“Friendships born on the field of athletic strife are the real gold of competition. Awards become corroded, friends gather no dust.”
Jesse Owens

What has been the highlight of your skating career so far?

Getting to skate with girls like Steely, Karmen and Ophelia. When I was in fresh meat I admired them so much and they seemed a world away but now we skate in circles together as a team and it’s wonderful.

Most embarassing moment?

The curious incident of a high-speed collision between me and a referee at a public bout. Positively mortifying. Let us never speak of it again.

Have you got any training tips?

When you can’t do something just keep trying. Any down-time on the track just practise over and over. I usually have to do drills about a hundred times and then I get it, and then I repeat them about a hundred more to get good at it. Another thing I personally find handy… if you have a bad side always work on that first. For me transitioning on the inside line doesn’t come naturally so I worked on that, then once that clicks an outside transition seems easy.

Listen to your pivot :)

What are your derby aspirations?

Make friends, learn skills, win bouts.

Who would you nominate as the next Wardian of the Month?

Snappa or Trax or Bubbles or Rolla or Drew or Duce or Trauma or Bruiser or Minty or fresh meat girl who’s just NSOed for the first time… everyone contributes great work to the league I wouldn’t single out any individual.
