This weekend, the Dirty South Derby Girls are on the road. They’re headed to the Big O Tournament in Eugene, Oregon, hosted by the Emerald City Roller Girls. It’s a three-day derby extravaganza, with teams from WFTDA, MRDA, and junior leagues flying in from around the country (and the world!) to duke it out. Read on to find out who Atlanta will be playing, how they’ve been preparing, and how you can keep up with the action from the comfort of your living room.

On Friday, DSDG takes on the Bay Area All Stars in their first scheduled match of the tournament. Bay Area is currently ranked second in the WFTDA rankings, just behind Gotham, and they took third place in the 2014 championships. Saturday sees Atlanta fighting the Boston Derby Dames‘ Boston Massacre, who are currently ranked 24th to Atlanta’s 13th. And Atlanta faces the Rose City Rollers‘ Wheels of Justice on Sunday in their final bout of the tournament. Rose is a close third behind Bay Area’s second place WFTDA ranking, and they were a mere three points shy of ending Gotham’s undefeated streak in the 2014 playoffs. Judging by that exhilirating match, Atlanta will be facing some fierce competition to round out the tournament.
With all this exciting high-level play ahead, we talked to Queen Loseyateefa about what she’s looking forward to and how DSDG has been preparing to sweep the tournament.
Which team are you most eager to skate against this weekend?
Queen: The Victorian Roller Derby League game which is not published in the schedule is what I would consider to be the most exciting for me. Obviously every opponent is formidable but this will be DSDG’s first opportunity to play VRDL so there is so much excitement amongst the team going in to what will be our first game of the long weekend. We are very grateful to both the Big O and our internal WFTDA committee for orchestrating this on our behalf.
VRDL is known for their diamond or “whirlwhip” defense. Has DSDG been working on anything at practice to counteract the strengths or exploit the weaknesses of this approach?
Queen: As a team we review bout footage like any other team but our focus at practice is playing to our strengths and minimizing any weakness that we have rather than trying to put a team in a box since adjustments can be made at any time. We try to keep the focus on ourselves… ALWAYS.
Anything else you want to say to your fans or to the opposing teams?
Queen: To our fans we’d like to say thank you for your continued support as we grow and try to represent our city and league in the best light, on and off the track. To opposing teams we’d like to say thanks for the opportunity and see you soon.
You can watch the scheduled play on all three tracks at The Big O’s website. Atlanta will be skating against Bay Area on Friday at 8:30pm EST; against Boston on Saturday at 10pm EST; and against Rose on Sunday at 3pm EST. The full schedule is available here.
