D2KW: Demolition City Rolls Over Boulder, 194-183

FOLLOW:

KITCHENER, WATERLOO, ON–In one of the closest matches we’ve seen all weekend, 8 seed Demolition City and 6 seed Boulder County competed to move forward within the consolation bracket. Demolition City lost to Bear City in the first Kitchener-Waterloo game yesterday and Boulder County lost to Rideau Valley last night. Lead changes were the theme of the game, and it seemed that either team could have easily taken the win throughout the game. Ultimately, Demolition City was able to secure a lead in the last 3 jams, winning 194 to 183.

The first half delivered a very close game. In looking at the score as well as general strategy, these teams seemed very evenly matched, which made for a good bout. Through most of the first half, both teams used fairly loose defensive walls, which were equally successful. Jammers were generally able to break through their initial pass quickly, and score points fairly easily on scoring passes as a result. This made getting lead jammer even more important than normal through this half.

With 16:30 left in the half, Demolition City was up 64 to 41. At this point, Boulder County was receiving more penalties than Demolition City, and this certainly played a role in Demolition City maintaining a small lead over Boulder for quite some time. In jam 10, Boulder County was able to reestablish lead, playing very well when not in the box. Boulder County was utilizing a very unique 3 and 1 defensive strategy, using the single blocker as a last line of defense or offense, depending on the situation.

Between jam 10 and 13, we saw several lead changes. DCRD was able to eventually establish more of a lead, and with 5:20 left in the half, the score was 97 to 84. With 3:10 left in the half, DCRD challenged the lack of point scoring that resulted after a lowblock call was deemed a no call. After a very long review, the score remained at 103 to 101, Boulder County favor. At the half, DCRD had regained lead with a 107 to 103 score.

Heading into the second half, both Demolition City and Boulder County tightened up defense, and the game was generally much slower than it had been in the first half. In the second half, lead changes happened nearly every jam, and this looked like it could have been anyone’s game until the last 3 or 4 jams. At 19:35, the score was 135 to 120, Demolition City’s favor.

Boulder County went 4 scoreless jams at one point, but were able to take advantage of Demolition City’s increased penalties and in jam 10, they closed the point gap 139 to 136, Demolition City still in the lead with 13:30 left in the game. Demolition City had 3 key blockers with 5 penalties apiece by this time, which put them in a bit of a dangerous spot.

With 9 minutes left to play, Boulder County had taken what was a significant lead by this game’s standards, 160 to 151. They were not able to hold onto this lead, however, and Demolition City took a 10-point lead in jam 15.

Going into the final jam, Demolition City was up 191 to 171. Boulder County put up a valiant fight, using a power jam in their favor to gain some points, but were unable to overturn the game in the end. Demolition City will go on to play Queen City tonight at 6:00 PM, and Boulder County will play Grand Raggidy tomorrow at 10:00 AM.
