SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE — The Circle City Derby Girls captured championship honors in their A-team Socialites’ first tournament bid after beating three teams in a day-long battle in South Sioux City, Nebraska. CCDG, a WFTDA Apprentice league, went undefeated in the fourth annual Rolling Along the River tournament, which this year brought together women’s and men’s teams from around the Midwest.

Circle City stepped off their winning streak with a 193-23 victory over the Norfolk Bruizin’ Bettys (Norfolk, Neb.) in an 8 a.m.-bout that opened the women’s double-elimination tournament. In their second match, the Derby Girls faced the Des Moines Derby Dames, a newly-branded WFTDA team that beat CCDG 154-88 in a bruising bout with a short-handed roster last June. Using tough defense in the October 15 game, Circle City’s blockers were able to effectively contain D3’s talented jammers, which included Team USA alternate and part-time Oly Roller, Stella Italiana. Circle City jammers were also able to overcome D3’s formidable defense enough to keep the score competitive throughout. Still, the bout was a toss-up until the final jam, when CCDG squeaked by with a 93-90 victory to advance to the championship bout.

It was past 10 p.m. when the whistle blew for the final bout, which pitted Circle City against the Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls, who had only been beaten once during the day by the tournament hosts, the Sioux City Roller Dames. Despite a strong jammer rotation and tough defense on the part of Fargo, also a WFTDA Apprentice league, Circle City held a lead for much of the bout, finally beating the North Dakota team, 131-117.

Circle City traveled more than 12 hours each way to participate in the tournament with Indianapolis’ men’s league, the Race City Rebels, who brought home second-place honors in the men’s division behind YMMD from Des Moines, Iowa. Beattie Sedgwick snagged team MVP for CCDG. The Derby Girls now enter their off-season.

Participants in the women’s division of the tournament included: Circle City Derby Girls (Indianapolis), Des Moines Derby Dames (Des Moines, Iowa), Fargo Moorhead Derby Girls (Fargo, N.D.), Norfolk Bruizin’ Bettys (Norfolk, Neb.), Sioux City Roller Dames (Sioux City, Iowa), and Sioux Falls Roller Dollz: Killer Beez (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Participants in the men’s division were: Cowtown Butchers (Kansas City, Mo.), Green Bay Smackers (Green Bay, Wisc.), Race City Rebels (Indianapolis), Rock City Riot (Fargo, N.D.), Sioux City Kornstalkers (Sioux City, Iowa), and Your Mom (Des Moines, Iowa).
