Not only are Manchester hosting the inaugural game of the Tier 2 National North division, they’re doing it in their favourite venue, the Academy. Nirvana made their mark here in 1991, Oasis in 1994, Girls Aloud in 2005 and Manchester Roller Derby burst on to the scene 2011, with a 100 point victory over Hot Wheel Roller Derby, who they’ll be meeting again later this year.
The second division is packed with old rivalries. Sunday’s game will see Manchester Roller Derby go up against Newcastle Roller Girls – the team have met on track twice before, leaving with a win apiece, and both will be eager to begin the championships with a victory under their belt.
The day will also see Hot Wheel Roller Derby take on Nottingham’s Hellfire Harlots. Nottingham triumphed over Hot Wheel in their debut game, but they are yet to replicate that success, with Hot Wheel leading the points for each match up since.
British Championship games will run until August, and all the teams will also be facing Leeds Roller Dolls and Hull’s Angels Roller Derby.
