The month of April in the Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA) saw a pair of leagues ranked within the governing body’s Top 8 post dominant wins, numerous squads within the Top 20 notch victories over newly-sanctioned leagues, and an unranked British team post a huge upset over its fellow countrymen.

Third-ranked New York Shock Exchange improved to 2-1 in sanctioned play, and 7-1 overall, with a 382-70 win over #18 Montreal (Mont Royals) on April 19. Up 253-50 at intermission, NYSE’s defense held the Mont Royals to 20 second period points en route to its second straight duke. (Watch the entire game here.)All was not lost for Montreal during the weekend, as the Canadians (1-1) notched a 150-141 victory over unranked Jersey Boys the day prior. The nine-point squeaker halted JBRD’s three game winning streak.

#8 Mass Maelstrom successfully launched its 2015 campaign with a 351-22 victory over #22 Quadfathers on April 4. The flat-track Norsemen’s next scheduled game is against the aforementioned Montreal in June. Despite its setback, the New York-based Quadfathers finished the month “in the black” overall (2-1) with a 357-86 win over unranked Toronto two weeks later.

#12 Magic City continued its upward trajectory with a 410-36 win over #17 Cincinnati on April 11. The Misfits (3-1 in sanctioned play) look to re-enter the MRDA championship tilt in October and its third straight triple-digit duke in the early stages of the season is certainly a push in right direction. They will have three games at “Spring Roll 2015” invitational in mid-May to maintain traction in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati (1-1) finished its April 11 docket on a positive note with a 149-87 sanctioned win over unranked Tampa Bay.

Indianapolis, Indiana-based Race City Rebels, ranked #16 in the MRDA, kicked off its season with a 353-42 triumph over #29 Capital City Hooligans this past Saturday night. They’ll have a trio of games at the aforementioned “Spring Roll” as well.

Also this past weekend, unranked Silures (Cardiff, UK) pulled off a major rankings upset with a 323-34 win over #15 Tyne and Fear on Saturday. The South Wales squad is undefeated (3-0) in sanctioned play, and 7-1 since becoming MRDA affiliated, and is projected by this author to make a huge debut when the next set of rankings are released. Tyne and Fear dropped to 1-1 in sanctioned play with the setback.

That game was part of the British Roller Derby Champs series, and the evening also included Southern Discomfort against Lincolnshire Rolling Thunder. The #5 London team took the unranked Rolling Thunder by 78 points, 157-79.

Elsewhere in the MRDA, Top 25 during the past month, #14 Twin Cities Terrors won its season opener with a 184-109 road win over #25 Sioux City Kornstalkers on April 11, #19 Carolina improved to 1-1 on the season with a 150-125 triumph over unranked Philadelphia on April 18, and the aforementioned Kornstalkers (1-1) shucked a 247-142 victory over unranked Big O Roller Bros on April 4.B

In other sanctioned action featuring unranked squads, Manchester evened its MRDA mark to 1-1 with its 144-128 win over British brothers Barrow on April 18.

May sees a plethora of sanctioned games highlighted by “Spring Roll 2015,” held May 15-17 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Seventeen MRDA battles involving 11 leagues are featured, which includes the governing body’s top two teams.

MRDA three-time defending champion Your Mom Men’s Derby (2-0) has tussles against #12 Magic City, #16 Race City and unranked Jersey Boys while second-ranked St. Louis GateKeepers (0-0) has duels against #6 Texas, #17 Cincinnati and #19 Carolina on its itinerary. The sixth-ranked Outlaws (2-0) also have games against Carolina and #26 Rock City on its docket for the weekend.

Sanctioned games in the upcoming month are also scheduled for “The Big O” invitational in Eugene, Oregon this weekend. #30 Red Deer Dreadnaughts faces unranked Denver Ground Control while 2015 MRDA-sanctioned additions Austin Anarchy and Salem face the Colorado-based rollers in separate tussles. Current #4 Puget Sound and #7 Bridgetown will continue their long-standing rivalry with a non-sanctioned bout this Saturday.

This weekend’s domestic action also features sanctioned games between #22 Quadfathers hosting unranked Philadelphia Hooligans on Sunday as well as #12 Magic City hosting Tampa Bay. Across the pond, Silures seeks its fourth straight win against hard-charging, French-entrant Toulouse Quad Guards.

Later in the month, #21 Capital District Trauma Authority travels to Philadelphia on Saturday, May 23 while a rankings side-by-battle takes place that same day as #27 Milwaukee Blitzdkrieg travels to #28 Chicago Bruise Brothers.
