The 10th Gay Games, to be held in Paris in August 2018, will include a roller derby competition.
The decision to include roller derby in the event was based on both the athleticism and aesthetic of the sport, as well as the recognition afforded it last year when the International Olympic Committee considered rollersports for inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games.
The roller derby tournament is expected to attract around 20 teams from around the world, totalling 300 participants. Teams of 14 will compete in two rounds of play: in the initial pool round, teams will compete round-robin to establish seeding; top teams will then progress to a knockout tournament for final placement. The tournament will happen over five days, from Monday August 6, 2018 to Friday August 10, 2018.
Boxing, petanque and wheelchair rugby enter the Gay Games lineup alongside roller derby for the first time in 2018. The event will also feature inline speed skating, among a variety of other non-skating sports.
The Gay Games is an international sporting and cultural festival organised by and specifically for LGBTQ athletes, artists and musicians. For more information on the 10th Gay Games in general visit paris2018.com, or see the roller derby page on their site.
